An Analysis Of Language Politeness In Communication Via Whatsapp Messages From Students To Lecturers (A Case Study In English Study Program Of Nusa Cendana University)

This study aims to identify the utterances of language politeness in conversations between students and lecturers via WhatsApp messages and to analyze whether or not there are any deviations of principles in conversations between students and lecturers via WhatsApp messages. There are two research problems in this study: (1) what are the utterances of language politeness in conversations between students and lecturers via WhataApp messages? (2) are there any deviations of principles of language politeness in conversations between students and lecturers via WhatsApp messages?. This study uses a qualitative method. The data in this study are screenshots of WhatsApp messages. The writer applies Leech's theory (1983) to the principles of language politeness in finding answers to research problems. The data shows the students used six maxims in communication with their lecturers via WhatsApp messages. The six maxims of the principles of language politeness are 7 tact maxims, 5 generosity maxims, 2 approbation maxims, 2 modesty maxims, 4 agreement maxims, and 2 sympathy maxims. In the data result, it was also found that there were deviations of the principles of language politeness in conversations between students and lecturers via WhatsApp. There are three maxims of deviation that occur, namely the tact maxim where the students maximize the cost to others rather than benefit to others, then the generosity maxim in this maxim the students maximize the benefit to self rather than cost to self, and the maxim of agreement where the students more minimize disagreement between the two parties in communicating rather than agreement in communicating.
