An Analysis Of Symbols At Utan Weavings In Sikka Regency

This research was entitled " An Analysis of Symbols at Utan Weavings in Sikka Regency ". This title is selected based on the writer's curiosity to analysing the relation between the symbols and the meanings implied found on symbols at utan weavings in Sikka Regency itself. The research subject of this study is utan weavings as the traditional weavings from Sikka Regency. This research was aimed to analyzing the meanings of the symbolic forms found on utan weavings. The writer conducts this research used a qualitative method because, the writer conducts an analysis of all the contents of the symbols found on utan weavings in Sikka Regency. The result obtained from this research there are two kinds of utan weavings in Sikka Regency namely utan ha watan and utan welak. Utan ha watan consists of five symbols and utan welak also consists of five symbols. The symbols are in different shapes and indicate different meanings. The meanings are shown in the context of culture used Peirce's semiotics model intends to explained and described the data more detail. The context can be seen from all kinds of symbols found on utan weavings which provided variation of symbols of utan ha watan form and utan welak form which consist of five symbols from utan ha watan and five symbols also from utan welak. The symbols classified into representament, interpretant and object. Therefore, from the data analysis, the writer found that meanings of the symbols implied have indicated different cultural meanings between the form of utan ha watan and utan welak weavings who only worn by women in Sikka Regency. It can be concluded that symbols found on the utan weavings provides historical meanings based on the context of culture in Sikka Regency.
