Improving English Skills Using Video For The Eighth-Grade Students Of SMPN 7 Kupang

The aim of this thesis to what extent have the students’ English skills improve after being taught using video in teaching English. The eighth-grade students of SMPN 7 Kupang were chosen as the subject of this research. The research focused on implementing the video in learning English. The method used in this study was the qualitative descriptive method. The technique of data collection was pre-and post-test. The result shows that the students’ scores increased significantly from the pre- to post-test. In the pre-test only 2 students reached the MCM (Minimum Criteria Mastery) with the percentage 6.67% while in the post-test it changed 23 students reached the MCM with the percentage 76.6%. Besides, the students’ mean scores also improved from 41.8 to 71.5. The problems that the students faced in the pre-test were the students lack in vocabulary, they did not know the generic structure and the language features that used in the pre-test, and they were bored when they have to listen to the teacher for a long time. The students’ improvement in post-test happened because of the implementation of the video as a media for teaching English. They felt fun and more motivated when they learn used video and it is proven by the results of students’ scores in post-test. Therefore, the researcher concluded that the use of video as a media in teaching and learning English can improve the students’ English skills.
