Forms And Meanings Of Symbols In Hole Traditional Ceremony In Sabu Raijua Regency (A Cultural Semiotic Analysis)

This research is a semiotic analysis of forms and meanings of symbols in hole traditional ceremony in Sabu Raijua regency. The problems of the study are: firstly, what are symbols found in hole traditional ceremony in Sabu Raijua regency. Secondly, what are types of meaning of those symbols in hole traditional ceremony in Sabu Raijua regency. This study used descriptive qualitative method. The research was conducted in Lederaga village, Hawu Mehara sub-district, Sabu Raijua regency on March 2023. The researcher selected five informants as the data resource. This study used techniques like observation, interview, and note taking to collect data. The data were analyzed by using identifying and describing techniques. The result shows that there are 15 symbols that are found in hole traditional ceremony in Lederaga village, Hawu Mehara sub-district, Sabu regency. Those are: wonyiu (coconut), ana ngaka (black puppy), ana manu (red chick), kebiha (basked made of palm leaves), kebui (mung beans), terae (sorghum), kedue (rhombus-shaped packages of young palm leaves), kenana (betel), kelala (areca nut), ao (lime), dappi (mat made of palm leaves), aju wau (smelly tree), aju ha (dead woods found in seashore), pipa (rope made of palm fronds), and wo wadu (stone). There are four ypes of meaning of these symbols. They are: (a) Cultural meaning. For example: Wonyiu (coconut), Ana Ngaka (black puppy), Kebiha (basked made of palm leaves), Kebui (mung beans) and Terae (sorghum), Kenana (betel), Kelala (areca nut), and Ao (lime), Dappi (mat made of palm leaves), Aju Wau (smelly tree). These things contain cultural meaning because they have a strong connection to cultural values in a cultural context. (b) Social meaning. For example: Ana Manu (red chick) and Aju Ha (dead woods found in seashore). These things contain social meaning because these things are used to describe social connections as a result of social activities. (c) Conceptual meaning. For example: Wo Wadu (stone). This object contains conceptual meaning because its meaning is basically related to the definition in dictionary. (d) Connotative meaning. For example: Kedue (rhombus-shaped packages of young palm leaves). This object contains connotative meaning because it refers to communication expression when people deliver a massage by action instead of words.
