An Analysis Of The Use Of Elliptical Sentences By The Second Semester Students Of English Department Of Nusa Cendana University

Elliptical sentence is one specific aspect of English sentence structure. This research explained the analysis of the use of elliptical sentences by the second semester students of English Department of Nusa Cendana University. This research was conducted based on the three research problems: (1) How grammatical is the use of elliptical sentences by the second semester students of English Department of Nusa Cendana University? (2) What are the weaknesses and strengths in the use of elliptical sentences by the second semester students of the English Department of Nusa Cendana University? (3) What difficulties are faced by the second semester students of the English Department of Nusa Cendana University, in the use of elliptical sentences? This research used a descriptive qualitative method. The data resources of this research are the two classes of second semester students of English Department, Nusa Cendana University (class C and D) which consist of 68 students. In collecting the data, the researcher used test and interview. The result of data analysis shows that the second semester students of English Department, Nusa Cendana University still used Elliptical sentences ungrammatically. In finishing the test, most students find difficulties in determining the grammatical elliptical sentences. The researcher found more weaknesses than the strengths of students in the use of elliptical sentences. Based on the three types of elliptical sentences, the researcher found the weaknesses in the use of positive and negative elliptical sentences, especially in the use of “either” and “neither”, and strengths in the use of contrary elliptical sentences (the use of “but”). The weaknesses found are: (1) Students do not understand and master the material about elliptical sentences (2) Students do not know how to differentiate the use of each type of elliptical sentences (3) Students cannot determine the appropriate auxiliary and use the correct tense in the sentences. With respect to the weaknesses found in the use of positive and negative elliptical sentence, the writer concludes some difficulties faced by class C and D second semester students in the use of elliptical sentence, those are: (1) difficulties in analyzing the sentences (2) difficulties in forming an elliptical sentence grammatically (3) difficulties in understanding the options in the questions.
