IDENTIFYING STUDENTS’ VOCABULARY LEARNING STYLES PREFERENCES OF THE ELEVENTH GRADERS OF SMAN 1 SOE

ABSTRACT
The aims of this study are (1) to know the students’ vocabulary learning styles preferences and their percentages; (2) to find out the most dominant vocabulary learning style used by the students; (3) to find out the dominant vocabulary learning style which influences the students’ scores; (4) to find out the teacher’s strategies in adjusting the teaching method to the students’ learning styles. This study used qualitative-quantitative method (mix method). The population of this research was 386 students from the eleventh grade of SMAN 1 SoE. The sample was taken 30% of the population. Thus, the sample used in this research was 115 students from Social Science Class. The research instruments used for data collection in this study were a questionnaire, a test, and an interview. The researcher identified students’ vocabulary learning styles based on Dunn & Dunn’s (1989) model, namely Physiological Stimuli in Perceptual Preferences. The finding have shown that there have been 64 students (55.6%) in visual learning style, 25 students (21.7%) in auditory learning style, 15 students (13%) in tactile learning style, and 11 students (9.5%) in kinesthetic learning style. Even the visual learning style has been categorized as the dominant one; it did not have any affect on students’ English scores in general. Based on the comparisons of English scores documented by the teacher, it has been revealed that the individuals highest scores belonged to the student with tactile learning style (90); whereas the average of the group’s highest scores achieved by kinesthetic learning style (77.7). Based on the interview, the teacher has some strategies to adjust her teaching method to her students’ learning styles such as preparing interesting materials and using interesting media to be implemented in the teaching process.
