An Analysis Of Difficulties In Reading Descriptive Text Of The Eleventh-Grade Students At SMAK Bhaktyarsa Maumere In Sikka Regency In The Academic Year 2023/2024

This thesis is entitled “AN ANALYSIS OF DIFFICULTIES IN READING DESCRIPTIVE TEXT OF THE ELEVENTH-GRADE STUDENTS AT SMAK BHAKTYARSA MAUMERE IN SIKKA REGENCY IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2023/2024”. The problems of this research are (1) What are the difficulties in reading the descriptive text of the eleventh-grade students at SMAK Bhaktyarsa Maumere? (2) What are the factors causing the students' difficulties in reading descriptive text? The research’s aims are (1) To know the difficulties in reading the descriptive text of the eleventh-grade students at SMAK Bhaktyarsa Maumere (2) To know the factors causing the students’ difficulties in reading descriptive text at SMAK Bhaktyarsa Maumere. The method used in this research was qualitative and quantitative. The subjects of this research were 30 students of eleventh-grade students of SMAK Bhaktyarsa Maumere from class XI MIPA 2. The data were collected by using a test and an interview. The questions on the test were designed based on 5 reading comprehension aspects. The research results show that the students have difficulties in comprehending the descriptive text. The difficulties are classified into very low, low, average, high, and very high criterion. The major difficulties faced by students were locating references (76%), finding detailed information (71%), and understanding vocabulary (68%) that classified into high criterion. In addition, the student's difficulty in reading was affected by some factors including difficulty in understanding the long sentence in the text, lack of vocabulary, environmental influences, unfamiliar vocabulary, and lack of motivation.
