DIFFICULTIES IN WRITING DESCRIPTIVE TEXT BY THE SECOND GRADE STUDENTS OF SMPN 5 KUPANG IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2023/2024

The research problems in this study are: (1) what are the difficulties in writing descriptive text by the second grade students of SMPN 5 Kupang in the academic year 2023/2024; (2) what factors that cause students difficulties in writing descriptive text by the second grade of SMPN 5 Kupang in the academic year 2023/2024. This study aims to know students' difficulties and the causes of difficulties in writing descriptive text. The research used a descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected by using test and interview. The population of this research was the eighth grade students of SMPN 5 Kupang which consist ten classes with the total number of 132 students. There were 27 students of class VIIIB selected for the sample of this study. The result of data analysis showed that: (1) in the test, the students difficulties in writing descriptive text related to grammar and vocabulary. This finding is supported by interview results with the students, it showed that there were some difficulties faced by the second-grade students at SMPN 5 Kupang: the difficulties are the student's lack of vocabulary, the student's lack of enthusiasm to learning English, and the student's lack of grammar knowledge. (2) The factors that cause students difficulties in writing descriptive text were lack of vocabulary, lack of grammar knowledge, and less of writing practice. In conclusion, students’ difficulties can be solved if the students are motivated and interested in learning, the writer suggests students should read a lot, not to be lazy to ask questions to the teachers, and do more efforts to better their English. To reduce the existing problems, the researcher suggests that teachers use some media in the teaching-learning process, so the students are more motivated and have the enthusiasm to write and to learn English.
