ERROR IN USING SIMPLE PAST TENSE IN RECOUNT TEXT WRITTEN BY THE ELEVENTH-GRADE STUDENTS OF SMAN BARANUSA IN ALOR

This study aims to know the errors and the causes of errors made by the eleventh-grade students of SMAN Baranusa in Alor in their recount text writing. This study used the qualitative-quantitative method (mixed method). The total population was 63 students from the two classes of SMAN Baranusa in Alor. The writer selected science class B which had 32 students as the sample. In this study, the writer used two instruments. The first instrument was a writing test in the form of recount text written by students to answer the first research question; “what are the types of errors made by the eleventh-grader students of SMAN Baranusa in Alor?”. The second instrument questionnaire is to answer the second research question; “what are the causes of errors made by the eleventh-grader students of SMAN Baranusa in Alor?”. The writer analyzed the data by identifying, classifying, and calculating the data. The finding showed that 112 errors were identified as types of errors made. The types of errors were classified based on Dulay’s (1982) theory, namely surface strategy taxonomy. There were four types of errors made by eleventh-grader students of SMAN Baranusa in Alor in their recount text. There were 11 errors (9.82%) of omission, 6 errors (5.35%) of addition, 7 errors (6.25%) of misformation, and 88 errors (78.58%) of misordering. There were three causes of errors made by the students in writing a recount text: 79 or (43.16%) carelessness, 46 or (25.13%) first language interference, and 58 or (32.22%) translation. Based on the result, it is figured out that the students still lack knowledge and have difficulty in using structure in writing.
