AN ANALYSIS OF THE PROBLEMS IN TRANSLATING ENGLISH POETRY INTO INDONESIAN: A CASE STUDY OF THE ENGLISH STUDENTS CLASS OF 2019

This research is based on the results of students' poetry translation who encountered problems in translating poetry from the source language (SL) which is English into the target language (TL). The aim of this study was to identify what problems faced by the students in translating English poetry into Indonesian. In conducting this research the writer used descriptive method. The data resource of this research was the English students’ class of 2019. There were three main problems encountered by the students dealing with translating English poetry into Indonesian, namely: lexical problems, grammatical problems and cultural problems. It can be seen from the result of test and questionnaire by English students’ class of 2019. In terms of lexical problems, about 85% of students encountered problems in finding equivalent words or expressions in the target language that could best convey the meaning and effect of the poetry. Meanwhile, about 80% of students encountered grammatical problems in translating poetry. They identified problems in understanding sentence structure, verb tense, word order, and other grammatical aspects that can impact the clarity and aesthetics of the translated poetry. In addition, around 25% of the students faced problems related to cultural differences. The English poetry contained cultural nuances that were difficult for them to translate into Indonesian.
