English Student’s Perception On The Roles Of Youtube In Improving Student’s Listening Skills By Third Semester Students Of English Study Program, Nusa Cendana University In The Academic Year 2022/2023
XMLThis study aims to find out the perception of third semester students at the English study program of Nusa Cendana University on the roles of YouTube in improving their listening skills and the problems perceived by third semester students at the English study program of Nusa Cendana University in improving their listening skills. The research method that was used in this research was quantitative-qualitative research method (mixed method) with descriptive approach. The population of this research was 170 students from the third semester of English Study Program of Nusa Cendana University in the academic year 2022/2023. The sample was 25% of the population. Thus, the sample that was used in this research is 42 students. Techniques that were used to collect the data were questionnaire and interview. The quantitative data obtained from the result of the questionnaire were analyzed to know the perception of students and the problems they perceived about the roles of YouTube in improving their listening skills. In addition, the qualitative data were obtained from interviewing five students. The result of the interview was used to explain more in-depth the results of the questionnaire. The findings revealed that: (1) Students generally possess positive perceptions toward the roles of YouTube in helping students listen better. In fact, students agreed that YouTube improves their motivation in listening (77% categorized Agree). Moreover, students perceive that YouTube offers them time flexibility to practice listening (70% categorized Agree). Furthermore, students agreed that YouTube provides them with diverse content for learning listening (77% categorized Agree), and lastly, the majority of the students agreed that YouTube is an effective tool for learning listening (74% categorized Agree). (2) Problems that were encountered by the students in using YouTube in improving their listening skills were fast-paced videos, understanding specific accents or dialects, distractions from ads and suggested videos, and the search for content matching the student's proficiency level.
