PROBLEMS IN WRITING A NARRATIVE TEXT FACED BY THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMP NEGERI 2 KUPANG TIMUR IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2022/2023

This thesis is entitled ‘problems in writing a narrative text faced by the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Kupang Timur in the academic year 2022/2023. The subjects of this study were the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Kupang Timur consisting of 25 students. The problems of this research are “what are the problems in writing a narrative text and what are the possible solutions to solve the problems in writing a narrative text faced by the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Kupang Timur in academic year 2022/2023. This study aims at
presenting the problems that were faced by the students in writing narrative text and suggesting possible solutions to solve the problems. The method used in this study was Descriptive Qualitative. The instruments used to collect the data were a writing test and interview. Based on the analysis of students' writing, the students’ ability in writing narrative texts was fair, determined by the skill levels adopted from Brown (2007). The result of this study also showed that the students faced several problems in writing narrative text. There were two kinds of problems
found in students' writing; they were linguistic problems including grammar and vocabulary related problems, and nonlinguistic problems which include organization of ideas, content and mechanical problems. The most frequently found problems in students’ writing were related to grammar and mechanical. To overcome these problems, there are some suggested solutions which include using cooperative learning or rapid writing strategy in teaching writing narrative text. In addition, it is also suggested that a teacher should be a good teaching and learning
facilitator and should also have a well-prepared teaching material which is appropriate and inspiring to the topic of teaching.
