AN ANALYSIS OF COHESIVE DEVICES USED IN THESIS BACKGROUND WRITTEN BY MARIA MANIMA A STUDENT OF ENGLISH DEPARTMENT OF NUSA CENDANA UNIVERSITY

This thesis is entitled “An Analysis of Cohesive Devices Used In Thesis Background Written by Maria Manima a Student of English Department of Nusa Cendana University”. This research is a descriptive research which aims to analisys the types and functions of cohesive devices in thesis background. The subject of this research is thesis background written by Maria Manima, a student of English Department of Nusa Cendana
University. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. There are six types of cohesive devices according to Halliday and Hassan (1976:4). They are (grammatical devices) consist of reference, substitution, ellipsis, conjunction, (lexical devices) consist of reiteration and collocation. From the text of thesis background written by Maria Manima, there are 42 sentences is used as the data to be analyzed. Based on the data that has been analyzed, there are 305 of cohesive devices which consist of 24 items of reference, 45 items of conjunctions, 3 items of substitution, 233 items of reiteration. Meanwhile types of cohesive devices not found in the text are ellipsis,collocation. References used are personal pronoun and possessive determiners which have function to replace nouns and to show the possession of the nouns. Substitution used is kind of nominal substitution which has function to avoid repetition words. Conjunction is used to connect two words or phrases,
show cause and effect relationship between sentences in the text. The function of repetition word is to showing that word is keyword in the text. The function of the synonym is to change the use of words in certain part so that the words used are varied. So that the sentences built by those words are not boring. In addition, synonym also used to avoid the repetition words, the function of antonym is to show a contrasting relationship between several sentences.
