THE USE OF STAD METHOD IN TEACHING ASKING AND GIVING OPINION TO THE ELEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMA PGRI KUPANG

This study entitled “The Use of STAD Method in Teaching Asking and Giving Opinion to The Eleventh Grade Students of SMA PGRI Kupang”.STAD (student teams achievement division), is a cooperative learning strategy in which small groups of learners with diferent level of ability work together to accomplish a shared learning goal. The aims of this study were (1)to know how is the implementation of STAD method in teaching asking and giving opinion to the eleventh grade students of SMA PGRI Kupang, (2)to know how student’s responses toward the implementation of STAD method in teaching asking and giving opinion. The writer took only one class that was XI IPA with the number of students was 17. The method used was qualitative and quantitative method. The quantitative data were obtained from the score of student’s speaking test. to know how the implementation
of STAD method in teaching asking and giving opinion it can be seen from the improvement of student’s ability at expressing asking and giving opinion by using STAD method can be seen from the mean of student’s score in pre-test, and posttest.The students mean score in pre-test was 72,35 whereas in post-test was 80,88. In the pre-test the students who took the test was 17 but, only 5 students were success get score up to 75 with persentage (29,42%) and 12students were failed to get score up to 75 with the percentage (70,58%). While in post-test the students who took the test were 17. whereas 16 of them were passed with the percentage (94,12%) and only 1 student failed with the percentage (5,88%). The qualitative data were taken from interview, observation sheet and documentation to know the students respond towards the implementation of STAD method. From the interview and observation sheet the researcher can conclude that the students of IX IPA class had high motivation to learning English through STAD method.
