READING INTERESTS OF ELEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMAN 1 TAEBENU IN ACADEMIC YEAR 2023/2024

This research has three research problems, they are, as follows: (1) What factors influence the interest of eleventh grade students of SMAN 1 Taebenu in the academic year 2023/2024 in reading? (2) What are the obstacles faced in increasing eleventh grade students of SMAN 1 Taebenu in the academic year 2023/2024 interest in reading? (3)What are the efforts to increase eleventh grade students of SMAN 1 Taebenu in the academic year 2023/2024 interest in reading? There are three aim of this research, they are, as follows: (1) To find out and describe the factors that influence eleventh grade students of SMAN 1 Taebenu in the academic year 2023/2024 interest in reading. (2) To find out and describe the
obstacles faced in increasing eleventh grade students of SMAN 1 Taebenu in the academic year 2023/2024 reading interest. (3) To find out and describe the efforts to increase eleventh grade students of SMAN 1 Taebenu in the academic year 2023/2024 interest in reading. This research used qualitative descriptive method. This research was conducted in SMAN 1 Taebenu in November 2023. The subjects of this research were 27 eleventh grade language program of SMAN 1 Taebenu. There are three techniques that used to collect the data, such as: observation, questionnaire, and note taking. There are three data analysis technigues, they are as follow: the researcher identified student’s reading interests, researcher described student’s reading interests and obstacles faced in increasing reading interest, and the researcher concluded the result and then reported Based on findings and discussion on chapter four can be concluded that the quality of students' reading is at a disinterested level according to the results of observations, while the results using questionnaires show that students' interest in reading is
high. There are some basic factors that influence reading interest are physical condition, mental condition, and social environment. Factors that become obstacles to increasing interest in reading are homework, school environment, reading material, family, TV, and handphone. Efforts that can be made to increase interest in reading are controlling the use of handphones and TV as well as providing reading materials that attract student’s interest in reading.
