This thesis is entitled: ‘Descriptive Text Reading Ability of Eleventh-Grade Students of Sman 12 Kupang in the Academic Year 2023/2024’. The problems of this research are : (1) What is the descriptive text reading ability of the eleventh grade students of SMAN 12 Kupang in the academic year 2022/2023 to comprehend descriptive text? and (2) What are the problems encountered by the students in comprehending descriptive text? (3) What are the solutions offered to overcome those problems? This study aims (1) To know whether the eleventh grade students of SMAN 12 Kupang in the academic year 2022/2023 can comprehend descriptive text. (2) To identify problems encountered by the students in comprehending descriptive text. (3) To find out the solutions to overcome those problems. The method used was the descriptive quantitative method. The research was conducted in SMAN 12 Kupang in June 2023. The subjects were the eleventh grade students in the
academic year 2023/2024. To gain the data, the writer used a subjective test about descriptive text and an unstructured interview. The results show that the eleventh-grade students of SMAN 10 Kupang were able to comprehend descriptive text because based on the result of the test, their level of ability was classified as a good level with a percentage of 70%. There were 10 students who got excellent scores (80-100), there were 7 students who got good scores (70-79), 4 students who got fair scores (60-69), and another else was categorized as poor scores (0-59). The mean of students' scores was 70. There were some difficulties encountered by the students in comprehending descriptive text as follows, understanding the meaning of the text, scanning the locate specific information, skimming the grasp the main idea, determining the generic structures of descriptive texts if the texts consist of more than one paragraphs. There were some problems faced by students, namely, students were poor in vocabulary, students had problems with the use of tenses, students could not determine the generic structure of a descriptive text, and students did not have source books in English. The solution to overcome those problems was translating words to find their meaning. This way is effective for students to increase their vocabulary. Translating words can help them to comprehend the text, and its main idea, skim and scan to locate specific information, understand parts of a text through the generic structure. Watching short videos about English lesson on social media applications, suchas Facebook, Youtube, Instagram, and TikTok, can improve their English skills. This is trusted because nowadays students prefer to spend their time to play their gadgets rather than reading a text in a book. This way also entertains the students and will prevent them from feeling bored in learning English.
