PHONOLOGICAL STUDY ON SEGMENTAL FEATURES IN ENGLISH CLASSROOM PRESENTATIONS BY ENGLISH DEPARTMENT STUDENTS OF NUSA CENDANA UNIVERSITY
XMLThis thesis is entitled: 'A Phonological Study on Segmental Features in English Classroom Presentations by English Department Students of Nusa Cendana University'. The writer noticed a problem in EFL learners in a classroom presentation that could be potential for further investigation. The problems of this study are: (1) What segmental errors are found in the pronunciation of segmental English words by third-semester students at Nusa Cendana University during classroom presentations. (2). What are the most common segmental errors in the pronunciation of English words by third-semester students at Nusa Cendana University during classroom presentations. (3). What are the most likely dominant factors contributing to the most common segmental errors in the pronunciation of English words by third-semester students at Nusa Cendana University during classroom presentations. This study aims to determine the segmental errors found in the pronunciation of English words during classroom presentations, the most common errors, and the most likely dominant factors contributing to the most common errors. The writer used a descriptive qualitative method. The writer has selected 15 students of third semester of English study program in academic year of 2022/2023 as the subjects. The data were collected by using note taking, observation, recording, and an interview. The writer relied on Moulton's (1961) theory of segmental features as the technique to analyze the data, which consists of four types of errors: phonemic errors, phonetic errors, allophonic errors, and distributional errors as kinds of segmental errors. The results show that during classroom presentations, the researcher discovered that 41 errors were made in the pronunciation of English segmental features. By applying Moulton's theory regarding segmental features, the writer found two types errors, which are phonetic errors and phonemic errors. There are twenty-five phonetic errors and sixteen phonemic errors were discovered in the study. The most common errors found is phonetic errors and consonant sounds since many English consonant sounds are absent in their native language. The researcher has also provided tables to better understand the most common errors and which English sound they commit, from most to least. Regarding factors contributing to the most common errors, the researcher found that first language interference, educational background, and lack of exposure to English play an important role in the errors
they commit, while psychological factors aren't adequate to be validated.
