THE EFFECT OF USING DUOLINGO TO DEVELOP VOCABULARY OF THE SECOND GRADE STUDENTS OF SMP SWASTA ELPIDA NOELBAKI

This thesis deals with The Effect of Using Dualingo Application to Develop Vocabulary of Eight Grade Students of SMP Swasta Elpida Noelbaki. This research aims at finding: (1) The use of the Duolingo application can develop the vocabulary of the second-grade students in SMP Swasta Elpida Noelbaki, (2) The strengths and weaknesses of using Duolingo in teaching vocabulary. This research applied methodology is some techniques used in explaining and finding answers to the research problems (Kothari, 2004). To gain a valid data, the appropriate methodology should be applied in conducting research (Morrison, 2000). In line with the research problems, this study used an experimental design with a quantitative research approach. Experimental research is a method used to look for a particular influence on others in a controlled condition (Sugiyono, 2007). This research used some techniques to collect the data: Treatment, Pre- test and post test. Based on the finding and discussion in chapter four above, the researcher concludes that the use of the Duolingo Apps are effective and have a significant influence in improving the vocabulary of students at Smp Swasta Elpida Noelbaki because based on the result of students pre-test and post-test and comparison between the Control and Experimental group, the researcher found that the student's total score in control group from 740 in the pre-test, increase to 800 in post-test after giving treatment without Kahoot games. Meanwhile, in Experimental group, the researcher found that student’s total score from 865 in pre-test, increase to 1195 in post-test after giving treatment by playing Duolingo apps. The mean of student’s score in control group increases not too significant from 49,33 in the pre-test to 57,67 in the post-test. Meanwhile in the experimental group, the mean score also increases extremely from 55,33 in pre-test to 79,67 in post-test. The researcher also calculates the percentage of improvement using the formula and found that the percentage of improvement in control group is 16,91%, and the percentage of
improvement in experimental group was 43,99%. The researcher also found that the student's level of ability increase in the post-test was categorized as excellent level or 60% after giving treatment by Duolingo Apps.
