Semiotic Analysis Of Peo: A Unifying Symbol For The People In Nagekeo Regency, East Nusa Tenggara

Language is a tool to communicate with humans through spoken, written, or symbols. Symbols used to communicate are usually found in works of art, such as traditional wooden poles in every society. Semiotics is the science of meaning, meaning behind symbols. In this research, the writer analyzed the symbol and the meaning of each symbol of peo. The aims of this research are 1) to know the kinds of symbols found on peo as unifying symbols for the people in Nagekeo Regency, 2) to describe the semiotic meaning of each symbol on peo as a unifying symbol for the people in Nagekeo Regency, and 3) to know the functions of peo. It is descriptive qualitative research. This research was conducted in Rendu Tutubhada Village, South Aesesa Sub-district, Nagekeo Regency. The result of this research proves that there are five symbols, and the meaning contained in peo as a unifying symbol for the people in Rendu Tutubhada Village, South Aesesa Sub-district, Nagekeo Regency, East Nusa Tenggara. They are Odo Mea Ata Fai (Female’s Genital), Mata Ne’e Izu (Eyes and Nose), Wea (Earrings), Ragi Bai (The Carving of Traditional Fabrics), Keli Wolo (Mountain). The writer expects that other researchers may conduct further studies related to the topic of this study.
