Semiotic Analysis Of Dowry In Marriage Tradition In Ulupulu Village, Nagekeo Regency
XMLThis thesis is entitled: “SEMIOTIC ANALYSIS OF DOWRY IN MARRIAGE TRADITION IN ULUPULU VILLAGE, NAGEKEO REGENCY”. The problems of the study are: first, what are the symbols of dowry in marriage tradition in Ulupulu Village, Nagekeo Regency. Second, what are the meanings of symbols found in dowry in marriage tradition in Ulupulu Village, Nagekeo Regency. This study aims to find out the symbols of dowry in marriage tradition in Ulupulu Village, Nagekeo Regency and to describe the meanings of the symbols of dowry in marriage tradition in Ulupulu Village, Nagekeo Regency. The method used was qualitative descriptive method. This research was conducted in Ulupulu Village, Nagekeo Regency on December 2023. The writer selected four informants as the data resource. The techniques used to collect data were taking pictures, interview, note taking, and recording. The data were analyzed by using identifying and describing techniques. The result shows that there are 23 symbols of dowries in the marriage tradition in Ulupulu Village, Nagekeo Regency. They are: buffalo (bhada), cow, horse (ja), goat (usa), sheep (lebu), chicken (manu), gold (wea), heirloom sword and spear (topo bhuja), dog (lako), money (doi), moke (tuak) coconuts (nio), betel nut and areca nut (wunu mengi), pig (wawi), mats and pillows (te’e ne’e lani), traditional cloth (hoba), baskets (ipe), rice (zea), coffe and sugar, shirt (labu), fritter and crispy flower snack, plate (kula), and cigarettes (bako). There are three typologies of signs found from each dowry symbol, which are as follows: 1) cultural icons, signs that are widely recognized as representing a particular cultural identity and often depict or represent important cultural concepts or values, for example; traditional cloth (Hoba ragi or hoba pole). 2) cultural index a sign that has a causal relationship with the cultural aspect it represents, for example; cow, horse (ja), goat (usa), sheep (lebu), chicken (manu), dog (lako), money (doi), moke (tuak), coconuts (nio), betel nuts and areca nuts (wunu mengi), pig (wawi), mats and pillows (te’e lani), traditional cloth (hoba ragi/hoba pole), baskets (ipe), rice (zea ka), coffe and sugar, shirt (labu), fritter and crispy flower snack, plate (kula), cigarettes (bako). 3) cultural symbols, a sign that has a special meaning in a particular cultural context and has been agreed upon by a cultural group to describe an idea or value of a particular culture, for example; buffalo (bhada), cow, horse (ja), gold (wea), heirloom sword and spear (topo bhuja), money (doi), betel nuts and areca nuts (wunu mengi), pig (wawi), traditional cloth (hoba ragi or hoba pola), and rice (zea ka).
