ANALYSIS OF FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE FOUND IN SUMBANESE FOLK SONGS BY KUN MALLY

This thesis is entitled: ‘ANALYSIS OF FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE FOUND IN SUMBANESE FOLK SONGS BY KUN MALLY’. The problems of this study are: firstly, what are types of figurative language found in Kun Mally’s songs? Secondly, what is the meaning of those figurative languages used in Kun Mally’s songs? This study aims to identify the types of figurative language found in Kun Mally’s songs and to describe the meaning of those figurative language in Kun Mally’s songs. The method used was descriptive qualitative method. The data resource of this study was five songs by Kun Mally. They are we’e mata, oro milla ate, pa umma, kuwaigu mori, and lolo li’ida. The data were analyzed by using some techniques such as identifying, classifying and describing. The result shows that there are some types of figurative language used in the five songs by Kun Mally, such as: (a). Hyperbole, for example, lyric 7 in the song Lolo Li’ida: Na male bana mata lodo (getting older).getting older. (b). Euphemism, for example, Lyric 8 in the song Kuwaigu Mori: ta etaza madubbu nabillaka wali ate (the sign of God’s birth).the sign of God’s birth. (c). Metaphor. For example: Lyric 11 in the song We’e Mata: We’e mata dama ngara we’e wira dama dori (very sad) and lyric 10 in the song Oro Milla Ate: mudeito madi dokuma (you bear our sins). d). Irony, for example, Lyric 5 in the song Oro Milla Ate: oro milla atemu, mudeito madi zalama (because of your generosity you bear our sins). (e). Personification, for example, : Lyric 13 in the song Oro Milla Ate: mupa koro koma gollu (you protect us), lyric 3 in the song Pa umma: nabotowe ategu (heart isn’t ready). The means of those figurative language found such as: (a). Hyperbole, example, na male bana mata lodo (sunset) getting older means parents who are remind their children to not ignore them because they are getting old. (b). Euphemism, example, Ta etaza madubbu nabillaka wali ate (we see a very bright star that makes us happy) we see the sign of God’s birth that makes us happy means a large ball of burning gas in space that we see as a point of light in the sky at night. The meaning of star is sign of God’s birth. (c). Metaphor, example, we’e mata dama ngara we’e wira dama dori (tears and snot flowing non stop) very sad means the subject who expresses his sadness over the loss of a father. (d). Irony, example, oro milla atemu mudeito madi zalama (because of the sadness of your heart, you carry our guilt) because of your generosity, you bear our sins means God who gives mercy to people who are suffering. The phrase generosity means mercy. (e). Personification, example, nabotowe ategu (my heart is heavy) My heart isn’t ready means women who are not ready to leave their families because she loves them so much. The word heart refers to love.
