This thesis is entitled “AN ANALYSIS OF VOCABULARY MASTERY IN WRITING A DESCRIPTIVE TEXT BY THE ELEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMA KATOLIK SINT CAROLUS”. The problems of this research are (1) How is the students’ vocabulary mastery in their descriptive text? (2) What are their difficulties in writing a descriptive texts? (3) How do the students overcome their difficulties in writing? The research’s aims are (1) To find out the students vocabulary mastery to in descriptive text (2) To find out students difficulties in writing descriptive texts (3) To find out solutions to their writing difficulties. The method used in this research was qualitative method. The subjects of this research were 25 students of eleventhgrade students of SMA Sint Carolus Kupang from class XI IPA. The data instruments used were writing tests and interviews. This research instruments were used to collect the data for further analysis about the student's vocabulary mastery in writing a descriptive text. Students were asked to write a description text based on the topic given. Based on the results of analysis, the writer found the problems faced by students as follows: First, the mastery of student vocabulary in descriptive text was low or minimal. Student vocabulary was very limited. Secondly, students' difficulties in writing descriptive texts beside lack of vocabulary were: lack of grammar, lack of ability to develop ideas in paragraphs, and absence of mechanics. (Poor use of spelling, punctuation, and capitalization). The solution or way to overcome writing difficulties is that students should practice writing more; students practice much reading and writing, listening to music and watch more educational videos, teachers must give multiply reading and writing, students take a English courses, and provide motivation to students.
