AN ANALYSIS OF DIFFICULTIES IN COMPREHENDING ENGLISH READING TEXTS BY THE EIGHTH GRADERS OF SMPN 2 WULLA WAIJELU, EAST SUMBA REGENCY IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2024/2025

Waijelu, East Sumba Regency in Academic Year 2024/2025’. The problems of this study are: (1) What are difficulties encountered by eighth
grade students of SMPN 2 Wulla Waijelu, East Sumba regency in comprehending English reading texts. (2) What are offered solutions to
overcome those difficulties. This study aims to identify the difficulties encountered by eighth grade students od SMPN 2 Wulla Waijelu, East Sumba regency in academic year 2024/2025 in comprehending English reading text, and to describe the offered solutions of the difficulties encountered by eight grade students of SMPN 2 Wulla Waijelu, East Sumba regency in academic year 2024/2025 in comprehending English reading texts. The research design used was descriptive qualitative method. This research was conducted in SMPN 2 Wulla Waijelu, especially class VIII-B students in academic year 2024/2025 in SMPN 2 Wulla Waijelu. The data resource of this study was students’ worksheets. There were 30 students selected as the sample. In collecting the data, the students were given the multiple choice test. Beside that, the writer used interview technique. The data were analyzed by using identifying and describing techniques. There were also some formula used to analyze the data. The number of items of the test was 30 items. The result shows that eighth graders of SMPN 2 Wulla Waijelu in academic year 2024/2025 have diffilculties in comprehending English reading texts because based on the result of test there was only 1 student achieved excellent level
score, 3 students achieved good level scores, 3 students achieved fair level scores and 23 students achieved poor level scores. The mean of students’ grades is 41. There are some difficulties faced by the students, such as students do not have interest in stuying English, the reading time that was limited, the lack of vocabulary and confidence in practicing reading English texts. There are some offered solutions, such as the teacher had to increase teaching vocabulary in the classroom, the teacher asks them always practice to speak with their friends, and students should read English books diligently and finding the meaning of difficult words in the dictionary.
