The Ability In Comprehending English Narrative Text By Second Grade Students Of SMP Kristen Agape Indah In Academic Year 2023/2024

Narrative text is English text type that has a purpose to entertain the reader or listener. The story can be imaginative and factual. It can be folk tale, legends, fable, short stories and science fiction. The text consists of orientation, complication, or problems and resolution. Reading is one of the important things which has a significant contribution to the success of learning. The problem in this study are (1) To what extent is the second grade students of SMP Kristen Agape Indah are able to: comprehend English Narrative Text (2) what are the difficulties encountered by students in comprehending English Narrative Text? This study aims to know the students’ ability level in comprehending English narrative text and to describe problems encountered by students in comprehending English narrative text. There were 9 students, as the subjects of research. The writer used descriptive quantitative method. The test was used as the instrument items. The students were only able to do 15 items of the test deal with understanding between parts of the text through lexical cohesion, while 5 items could not be done by students. These 5 items of test dealt with scanning to locate specific information, deducing the meaning and use of unfamiliar words, and skimming to grasp the main idea. The result shows that majority of the students had “good level” in comprehending English narrative text. It was proved by the finding that 72% of the students had “good level” in the test. As a result, it is demonstrated that Second Grade Students of SMP Kristen Agape Indah.
