In speaking English, students tend to have problems with limited vocabulary, pronunciation accuracy, self-confidence, and others. Those happens because of many factors, one is the teachers’ strategy. The teachers’ strategy has a lot of influence on students' talk and can help students’ speaking mastery. The research was conducted at SMA Negeri 1 Soe. This research addressed two research questions: first, what are the strategies used by English teachers in teaching speaking to the English club students of SMA Negeri 1 Soe? Second, what are the difficulties faced by English teachers in applying particular strategies in teaching speaking to the English club students of SMA Negeri 1 Soe? The aims of the research were, (1) to identify and describe out what are the strategies used by an English teacher in teaching speaking, and (2) to identify and describe the problems faced by the English teacher in applying the particular strategies in teaching speaking. The research design used was descriptive qualitative method. The subject of this research was an English teacher who teaches 30th students in the English club of SMA Negeri 1 Soe. The data of this research were collected by using observation and interview techniques. The research followed three techniques of data analysis; data reduction, data display, and concluding. The result showed that English teachers implement strategies or a series of activities designed to achieve educational or teaching goals using various strategies in teaching and learning to speak. Those were; creating a small group activity, roleplay, discussion, storytelling, interview, playing cards, reporting, brainstorming, picture narrating, picture describing, simulation, information gap, and story complication. The problems faced by the English teacher were the speaking problems as follows: Students’ lack of vocabulary, word order, word choice, problems related to grammar, and students’ self-confidence (not brave enough to speak in English).
