This thesis is entitled: “A Study on English Learning Strategies Used by Second Semester Students of English Study Program of Nusa Cendana University in the Academic Year of 2023/2024” The purpose of this research is to identify the kinds of English learning strategies, especially learning strategies they prefer. The researcher used questionnaires based on the SILL questionnaire version 7.0 made by Oxford to gain information or data from respondents. The results of the research revealed that students with good marks in learning English used all six kinds of learning strategies including memory, cognitive, compensation, metacognitive, affective, and social. The most frequently used by the students is the metacognitive strategy. Whereas, the least frequently used by the second-semester students is social strategy. The overall learning strategy used by students was high, with a mean score of 3.62. Overall, the research findings highlight the diverse range of language learning strategies employed by students, with particular emphasis on Metacognitive strategies that support self-regulation and monitoring of the learning process. The result of the research provides learners with knowledge of their learning strengths as well as weaknesses in learning a foreign language in this case English. This suggests potential areas for improvement in managing the emotional and social aspects of language learning, which are crucial for a holistic educational experience and effective English skills.
