USING SCAFFOLDING TECHNIQUE TO IMPROVE ENGLISH READING COMPREHENSION OF GRADE EIGHT STUDENTS OF SMP NEGERI 20 KOTA KUPANG

This study aims to find and describe the effect of the scaffolding method on students' ability and understanding in identifying news elements of grade-eighth students at SMP NEGERI20 Kota Kupang. This research was conducted from September to October 2013. This research was classified as Quasi-experimental research. The study involved 27 students. The assignment was given to students before the treatment and the post-test was given after the treatment. The data from the students were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. After the data were tested and declared homogeneous and normal, the hypothesis was tested using the independent sample t-test. The results showed that the difference in the ability to identify the elements of the news between students taught using the scaffolding method and students taught without using the scaffolding method showed significant results. This can be seen from the results of hypothesis testing through the independent sample t-test. The significance value is smaller than the significance level of 0.05 (0.000 < 0.05), which means this research data was considered to have significant differences. Therefore, the hypothesis of this study is accepted. This means that the scaffolding method significantly improves students' ability to identify the elements of news. Therefore this method is very helpful for students in reading lessons, in the process of teaching and learning English in the experimental class at SMP Negeri 20 Kota Kupang.
