The Adaptation Process of Culture Shock Experienced by New Students in Learning English in English Study Program of Nusa Cendana University in Academic Year 2022/2023’. The problems of this research are: (1) What are culture shocks experienced by new students in learning English in English Study Program of Nusa Cendana University in academic year 2022/2023? (2) What are factors that cause culture shocks of the new students in Learning English? (3) How do they make cultural adaptations in learning English in English study program of Nusa Cendana University? This study aims (1) To describe culture shocks experienced by the new students in learning English in English Study Program of Nusa Cendana University, (2) To find out factors that cause the cultural shocks of the new students, (3) To find out how do they make cultural adaptation in learning English in English Study Program of Nusa Cendana University. The research design used was descriptive qualitative method. The writer selected 42 students as the sample of the total 168 students as the population. This research was concluded in English Study Program of Nusa Cendana University especially the first year students in academic year 2022/2023 on April, 2023. The data collection techniques are: observation, interview, note taking and recording. The data were analyzed by using two techniques such as, identifying and describing techniques. The result shows that most of these new students experienced cultural shock when they become a new student in English study program. The culture shock that they experienced such as, new environment which was very different from the environment when they were in high school. In their new environment, they met new friends who came from various islands and with different backgrounds, languages, habits, and it is shocked them. Second, culture shock they experienced was their learning behaviour. Unlike in high school, they were required to study independently and be responsible for every assignment given by the lecturer. Third, culture shock they experienced was the lecturers, they felt shocked because the lecturers taught in English, and they did not understand the instruction. Last thing that shocked these new students was because in the English education study program students are required to use English in interactions and master English skills including: Speaking, Reading, Writing, Listening and their vocabulary still limited. These new students are not used to using English and do not have sufficient English skills, that is why they were shocked. Furthermore, they are also went through four stages introduced by Oberg’s (1960), honeymoon stage, crisis stage, the stage of developing positive attitude and the stage of adjustment. Factors that cause the cultural shock of these new students are local languages and dialects, new friends, lecturer, the learning process, and learning situation and environment. The writer also found out that these new students made cultural adaptation in learning English in English Study Program by learning with supportive friends, push themselves to be brave and do not be afraid to try something new, socializing, and getting out from their comfort zone is the best way to adapt in the new environment.
