IMPROVING READING SKILL OF THE SEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMP NEGERI 4 KUPANG IN ACADEMIC YEAR 2023/2024 BY USING PICTURE TEXTS TECHNIQUE

This thesis is entitled : ‘Improving Reading Skill of the Seventh Grade Students of SMP Negeri 4 Kupang in Academic Year 2023/2024 by Using Picture Texts Technique’. The problem of this study is: can the use of picture texts technique improve reading skill of the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 4 Kupang in academic year 2023/2024? This study aims to know whether the use of picture texts technique can improve reading skill of the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 4 Kupang in academic year 2023/2024.The type of research design wasClassroom Action Research. The research subjects were 30 students of grade VII-D of SMP Negeri 4 Kupang in academic year 2023/2024. The instruments used were a test consists of 10 items,and an observation. Data analysis was carried out by calculating the percentage of observation data and student learning outcomes to determine the implementation of learning and student completeness in the learning process. The result shows that the use of picture texts technique can improve English reading skill of the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 4 Kupang in academic year 2023/2024. This can be seen from the results of students’ scores in the pre-test and post-test in the first cycle. The level of students’ reading skill in the pre-test was below the average that is 52 or 17%. In the cycle 1 there were only 5 students of 30 students got the Minimum Achievement Criteria (KKM). In the post test in cycle 2 the students reading skill level increased significantly that is 81 or 90%. Most of the students that is 27 students got the Minimum Achievement Criteria (KKM). It can be concluded that the picture texts technique can improve reading skill of seventh grade students at SMP Negeri 4 Kupang in academic year 2023/2024.
