THE KINDS AND MEANINGS OF SYMBOLS IN LAMBI TEI, TRADITIONAL WEAVING CLOTH IN ROTENESE CULTURE (A SEMIOTIC ANALYSIS)

This thesis is entitled: ‘THE KINDS AND MEANINGS OF SYMBOLS IN LAMBI TEI, TRADITIONAL WEAVING CLOTH IN ROTENESE CULTURE’. The study was conducted to answer the problems: (1) What are the kinds of symbols in Lambi Tei, traditional weaving cloth in Rotenese culture? (2) What are the meanings of symbols in Lambi Tei, traditional weaving cloth in Rotenese culture? This study aims to describe and explore the kinds of symbols in Lambi Tei and to describe and explain the meanings of symbols in Lambi Tei. The research method used was qualitative descriptive method. The research was conducted in Metina village, Ba’a sub-district, Rote Ndao Regency. The data resource of this research was five informants. The data were collected by using observation, interview, recording, and note taking techniques. The data were analyzed using identifying and describing techniques. The results show that there are twelve kinds of symbols, and the symbols have meanings. The kinds and meanings of the symbols include: Hua Ana Langi, which means power, leadership, and security in Nusak Ndao; Roa’ju or Su’u Dok, which means the fertility of the land in the Nusak Ba'a area, breadfruit as one of the food ingredients of the Ba'a people and the existence of bonds of brotherhood between the people of Nusak Ba'a. 'a with other people in Nusak on the island of Rote; Mada Karoko, which means sea urchin as a food ingredient for the people of Nusak Ndao that can support their economic needs; Dula pending, which means the uniqueness and privilege of the Nusak Termanu king’s family and also the existence of treaties and the power of the Dutch government in ancient times; Dula pilas, which means the courage and unity of warriors to maintain the security and integrity of the Termanu kingdom; Dula nggeok, which means the humility of the Rote people and also the simplicity of the king even though he lived in abundance of wealth; Makasenak, which means the unity between the king and the people to advance their kingdom; Henan nggo, which means the fertility of the thorny pandan plants on the coast of Rote Island and also supports the economy of the people on Rote Island; Badongko, which means love and natural or level equality between men and women; Kepiting, which means prosperity, fertility and protection for the Rote people and also supports the economy of the Rote people; Kerang Laut, which means the economic meaning and meaning of life for the Rote people; and Ndunak, which means preparedness and the meaning of kinship for the Rote people. The symbolic meanings of Lambi Tei are interconnected and reflect the ways Rotenese people view and make sense of their world.
