A Study on Idiomatic Expressions in Inferno Novel by Dan Brown, 2013

This thesis is entitled: "A Study on Idiomatic Expressions in Inferno Novel by Dan Brown, 2013." This study aims to: (1) identify the types of idiomatic expressions used in the Inferno novel, and (2) explain the meanings and functions of these idioms. A descriptive qualitative method was employed, with the Inferno novel by Dan Brown (2013) serving as the data source. Data collection techniques included note-taking and documentation. The data were analyzed through text analysis, identification, and description.
The results indicate: (1) Ninety-nine idioms were found in the Inferno novel, categorized into four types: Lexical idioms (Verbal, Nominal, Adjective, and Adverb), Phrase Form idioms, Frozen idioms, and Proverbs. (2) The functions and meanings of these idioms are as follows: (a) Lexical idioms describe something using verbs, adjectives, adverbs, or nouns to enhance listener comprehension. (b) Idioms are language expressions used by specific groups or individuals and can often be rephrased without altering the core meaning. (c) Frozen idioms are unique and cannot be changed. (d) Proverbs are fixed sentence fragments with specific meanings that require holistic understanding.
