AN ANALYSIS OF FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE IN SONG LYRICS OF ED SHEERAN

The problem of this research are: (1) What are types of figurative language used in song’s lyrics by Ed Sheeran? (2) What are the meanings of those types of figurative language. This study aims to find out and describe the types of figurative language used in song lyrics by Ed Sheeran and describe the meanings of figurative language used in song lyrics by Ed Sheeran. Research design use was descriptive qualitative method. The data resource of this study was five songs by Ed Sheeran such as Supermarket Flowers, Happier, Castle on the Hill, Lego House, I See Fire. The technique used to collect data was observation. The writer was observed by listening and reading the lyrics of Ed Sheeran songs and explain their messages. The data were analyzed by using identifying and describing techniques. The result shows that: (1) There are 7 types of figurative language in songs lyric by Ed Sheeran, such as: (a) Personification. for example: oh, misty eye of the mountain below. (b) Hyperbole. for example: Supermarket Flowers is lyric You were an angel in the shape of my mum. (c). Metaphor. for example: I'm gonna paint you by numbers and colour you in, if things go right, we can frame it and put you on a wall. (d) Paradox. for example: a heart that's broke is a heart that's been loved. (e) Oxymoron. for example: Dad always told me, "Don't you cry when you're down" but mum, there's a tear every time that I blink. (f.) Repetition. for example: ain't nobody hurt you like I hurt you but ain't nobody love you like I do. (g) Symbolic. for example: one friend left to sell clothes, one Works down by the coast, one had two kids but lives alone, one's brother overdosed, one's already on his second wife, one's just barely gettin' by. (2) The meanings of figurative language in songs lyric by Ed Sheeran, such as: (a) Personification. for example: oh, misty eye of the mountain below. This lyric shows a personification through parable of the inanimate objects like mountain have eye. (b) Hyperbole. for example: You were an angel in the shape of my mum. Meaning of this sentences shows something very exaggerated, human look like an angel and have wings to fly. (c). Metaphor. for example: I'm gonna paint you by numbers and colour you in, if things go right, we can frame it and put you on a wall. The song writer metaphorically speaking to his girlfriend that she is like a beautiful art painting to him and if things go right, they will go to the next level which is married. (d) Paradox. for example: a heart that's broke is a heart that's been loved. The sentence shows that it is contains paradox because the word A heart broke means depressed emotional state which is painful, sorrow or even grief. Meanwhile, the word love means an intense feeling of deep affection that cause a great pleasure or happiness. (e) Oxymoron. for example: Dad always told me, "Don't you cry when you're down" but mum, there's a tear every time that I blink. His dad told him not to cry, but he told he’s mom that he is crying. The sentences contain statements about a conflict. (f.) Repetition. for example: ain't nobody hurt you like I hurt you but ain't nobody love you like I do. The song writer repeats the word to make sure the listeners know the song writer statement. Repetition is an affective literary device that may suggest or add special meaning to a piece of literature. (g) Symbolic. for example: one friend left to sell clothes, one Works down by the coast, one had two kids but lives alone, one's brother overdosed, one's already on his second wife, one's just barely gettin' by. This lyric shows that the song writer and his friends is grown up and went their separate ways.
