This study aims at identifying symbols found in woven motifs, in East Rote sub district of Rote Ndao regency and describing the meaning of those symbols. The method used was descriptive qualitatif method. The research was conducted in Mukekuku village, East Rote Sub District, Rote Ndao Regency on January to February 2024. The data resources of this research were four informants. The data were collected by using observation, interview, picture taking, and note taking techniques. The data were analyzed, identified, and described by using the semiotic concept of trichotomy of sign concerning the relationship between interpretant and its object from Pierce's theory (1982). The result shows that there are two motifs found in East Rote sub district. They are (1) Peni (Python) which is a symbol of East Rote sub-district, Rote Ndao regency. It is called so because in ancient times, this motif was inspired by the patterns found on the body of a python, which are in the form of dots or elongated lines. Peni (Python) is a symbol of courage, strength, beauty, danger, unity, and social status. Pythons are often considered a symbol of strength and courage due to their large size and ability to strangle their preys. (2) Kai Buna (Flower) which is a symbol of East Rote sub-district, Rote Ndao regency. It is called so because in ancient times, when the weavers of East Rote wanted to create a weaving motif, they observed a beautiful flower on the trengguli tree (known as bubuni by the people of East Rote). Kai Buna (Flower) is a symbol of beauty, simplicity, unity, and social status. This motif is considered a symbol of beauty because the flowers in this motif look so gorgeous. This flower is often considered a symbol of life that continues to grow and develop, both in the family and in the community. Its presence is often associated with success in various aspects of life, such as abundant harvests, family growth, or positive spiritual development. There are three colors found in East Rote sub district cloth weaving, they include Ngeo (Black), Fula (White), and Pila (Red). When Peni (Python) and Kai Buna (Flower) motifs are worn, the community can instantly recognize that they belong to the people of East Rote. These motifs are also only woven by people from East Rote.
