An Analysis Of Clitics In Ja’o Dialect Of Ende Language

XML

This research investigates the use of clitics in the Ja’o dialect of the Ende language, an Austronesian language spoken by people living on Flores Island and Ende Island in East Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia. Despite the crucial grammatical roles clitics play in sentence structure and meaning, their study in the Ja’o dialect remains underexplored. This study aims to identify the types of clitics and examine their functions within this dialect. The findings reveal two main types of clitics: proclitics and enclitics. Proclitics consist of locative and numeral markers, while Enclitics include demonstratives, possessive pronouns, and aspectual markers. These clitics serve demonstrative, possessive, aspectual, and quantifying functions and are characterized by phonological features such as monosyllabic structure, short vowels, and lack of stress. The research highlights the integral role of clitics in the morphosyntactic structure of the Ja’o dialect, aligning with patterns found in other Austronesian languages. This study not only contributes to linguistic theory but also supports efforts to document and preserve the Ja’o dialect, encouraging future research and cultural preservation among native speakers and linguists alike.
