THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING ‘CAKE’ AS A MOBILE ASSISTED LANGUAGE LEARNING IN VOCABULARY ACHIEVEMENT FOR NINTH-GRADE STUDENTS OF SMP NEGERI 3 KUPANG

This study investigates the effectiveness of the Cake app as a Mobile Assisted
Language Learning (MALL) tool in enhancing vocabulary achievement among
ninth-grade students at SMP Negeri 3 Kupang. The research employed a quasi-
experimental design with pre-test and post-test involving two groups: an
experimental group using the cake app and a control group following
conventional learning methods. Data were analyzed using SPSS 27, including
normality tests, homogeneity tests, and a paired sample t-test. The findings
showed a significant improvement in the experimental group, where the mean
pre-test score increased from 53.73 to 83.07, while the control group improved
from 51.77 to 76.40. The paired sample t-test resulted in a p-value (Sig. 2-tailed)
of 0.001, indicating a statistically significant difference (p < 0.05). The results
of the hypothesis based on the paired sample t-test showed that the Tobserve value
was 15.709, which was higher than Ttable (2.0009). Additionally, the p-value (Sig.
2-tailed) was 0.001, which was lower than 0.05, indicating a statistically
significant improvement in vocabulary skills. Therefore, Ho was rejected, and
Ha was accepted, which confirms that the cake app significantly enhanced
students’ vocabulary. The research concluded that the cake app was an effective
and interactive tool for vocabulary learning, offering engaging features such as
native speaker videos, pronunciation practice with AI feedback, and interactive
quizzes. It was recommended for both teachers and students as an alternative
method to enrich English language learning in a fun and accessible way.
