An Analysis Of Code Switching And Code Mixing In Youtube Video Channel ‘Rintik Sedu’ By Tsana

The aim of this study is to describe the types of code switching and code mixing and the linguistic functions based on the videos in the YouTube video channel ‘Rintik Sedu’ by Tsana. The researcher uses a qualitative method to analyze the types of code switching, code mixing, and linguistic functions. This study is based on Gumperz's (1982) theory to know the types of code switching, Muysken's (2008) theory to know the types of code mixing, and Appel & Muysken's (2006) theory to know the linguistic functions. The researcher found 60 data from the three videos. Video 1 contained 7 utterances of code switching and 13 of code mixing, Video 2 showed 1 utterance of code switching and 17 utterances of code mixing, while Video 3 showed 2 instances of code switching and 20 utterances of code mixing. The identified types of code switching included interjection, quotation, reiteration, and message qualification, while code mixing manifested as insertion and alternation. Furthermore, the analysis of linguistic functions in the videos revealed the presence of referential, directive, expressive, phatic, and poetic functions.
