AN ANALYSIS OF TEACHERS’ QUESTIONING STRATEGIES DURING ENGLISH CLASSROOM INTERACTION OF THE TENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMAN 8 KUPANG IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2024/2025

This study is about teachers’ questioning strategies during English
classroom interaction of the tenth-grade students of SMAN 8 Kupang. The aims of
this study were: 1). to find out the types of questioning strategies used by teachers
during English classroom interaction of the tenth-grade students of SMAN 8
Kupang, and 2). to find out the effectiveness of questioning strategies used by the
teachers during English classroom interaction of the tenth-grade students of SMAN
8 Kupang. The researcher used observation, interview, and documentation as the
data collection techniques. The researcher used the theory of Miles and Huberman
as the data analysis techniques, which include data reduction, data display,
conclusion drawing and verification. The result of this research showed that, the
types of questions used by the English teachers were fifteen (15) procedural
questions, fifty-eight (58) convergent questions, and two (2) divergent questions.
The researcher found that questioning strategies were proved very effective during
English classroom interaction. With procedural questions helping to manage the
classroom, convergent questions encouraging more specific and clear answers, and
divergent questions stimulating students’ creativity and critical thinking, these
strategies not only enrich the learning experience but also build a more interactive
and enjoyable atmosphere in the classroom.
