USING SKIMMING TECHNIQUE IN TEACHING READING COMPREHENSION OF NARRATIVE TEXT TO NINTH-GRADE STUDENTS AT SMPN 4 KUPANG

This study investigates the effectiveness of the skimming technique in teaching
reading comprehension of narrative texts to ninth-grade students at SMPN 4 Kupang.
The research aims to identify how the skimming technique is applied in reading
instruction and to evaluate its impact on students’ comprehension skills. A qualitative
descriptive method was employed, involving observations, interviews, pre-tests, and
post-tests. The findings indicate that the skimming technique significantly improves
students' ability to identify main ideas, key details, and text structures efficiently. Pre-
test results showed that many students struggled with reading comprehension, while
post-test scores demonstrated a notable improvement after applying the skimming
technique. Despite its effectiveness, some students faced challenges in distinguishing
essential information from less relevant details. In conclusion, the skimming
technique is a beneficial strategy for enhancing students’ reading comprehension of
narrative texts, making reading more efficient and engaging. It is recommended that
teachers integrate this technique into their reading instruction to help students develop
better comprehension skills.
