Exploring Classroom Oral Corrective Feedback: Students' Perceptions And Teachers' Preferences At SMAN 4 Kota Kupang

XML

This research aims to explore EFL students’ perceptions and EFL teachers’ preferences regarding the use of Oral Corrective Feedback (OCF) in English speaking instruction. The study employs a qualitative approach with a phenomenological research design, involving in-depth interviews and classroom observations conducted at SMA Negeri 4 Kota Kupang. The data were analysed using thematic analysis to identify key themes from the participants’ experiences and perspectives. The findings reveal that most students perceive OCF as an essential element in enhancing their speaking skills, particularly in correcting pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary errors. Students generally prefer explicit correction, recast, and metalinguistic feedback because they are seen as clear and easy to understand. However, clarification requests are considered the least effective, as they often cause confusion and anxiety. Regarding the timing of OCF, students are divided some prefer to be corrected while speaking, while others Favor receiving corrections after finishing their speech. On the other hand, teachers view OCF as important for guiding students and encouraging gradual improvement. Teachers tend to give corrections after students finish speaking to maintain the flow of classroom communication, and they most frequently use explicit correction and metalinguistic feedback. Although clarification requests are seen by teachers as useful for stimulating students’ critical thinking and helping them explore their abilities, students often feel uncomfortable with this type of feedback. Overall, this study highlights both the similarities and differences between students’ perspectives and teachers’ preferences, emphasizing the importance of open communication and adaptive feedback strategies to improve the effectiveness of OCF in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learning.
