AN ANALYSIS OF IDIOMS USED IN BOB DYLAN’S ALBUM ENTITLED “SAVED”

Knowledge of idioms is essential for the competence and fluency in English, and a lack of information or knowledge about idioms can cause major misunderstandings, especially for foreign language learners. Since the meaning of idioms cannot be translated literally, students often encounter many difficulties in learning and translating idioms. One of the most interesting ways to learn idioms is by using songs. Therefore, to increase insight and knowledge about idioms and the meaning behind them, the author is interested in studying idioms and their meanings in his research entitled; An Analysis of Idioms Used in Bob Dylan's Album Entitled 'Saved". The problems of this research are: (1) What types of idioms are found in Bob Dylan’s album “Saved”? (2)What are the meanings of idioms found in Bob Dylan’s album “Saved”? This method used in this research was descriptive qualitative. The data research was Bob Dylan’s album, containing 5 songs which can be accessed from the website bobdylan.com. The writer used song lyrics as a data source. This research uses content analysis techniques to collect data. Data was analyzed by identifying, categorizing, and describing techniques. To classify types of idioms, the researcher used Seidl and McMordie's theory. In this research, the writer found 18 idioms in Bob Dylans album entitled Saved, namely; 4 idiomatic expressions in the song A Satisfied Mind, 5 idiomatic expressions in the song "Saved", 3 idiomatic expressions in the song What I Can Do for You?, 3 idiomatic expressions in the song Solid Rock, and 3 idiomatic expressions in the song Are you ready? Based on Seidl and McMordie's theory used in the song lyrics on Bob Dylan's album entitled "Saved", the researcher found 6 idioms of the preposition type, 5 idioms of the Idiom With Nouns And Adjective type, 5 idioms of the verbal type, 1 idiom of the pharsal verb type. , and 1 idiom of comparison type. The meaning of idioms in Bob Dylan's album Saved reveals various explorations of deep metaphorical and symbolic expressions, reflecting deep themes such as happiness, spirituality, inner struggle, and sacrifice.
