A Study On The Ability Of Reading Comprehension On Narrative Texts By Eleventh Grade Students Of SMAN 7 Kupang In Academic Year 2020/2021

This research is entitled “A Study on the Ability of Reading Comprehension on Narrative Texts by Eleventh Grade Students of SMAN 7 Kupang in academic Year 2020/2021. This research was conducted to answer the following questions: (1) To what extent are the eleventh grades students of SMAN 7 Kupang able to comprehend narrative texts in academic year 2020/2021 and (2) What kind of problems are encountered by students. The aims of this research are (1) The writer expects to know the level of abilites of eleventh grade students of SMAN 7 Kupang in comprehending narrative text and (2) The writer hopes to solve problems encountered by eleventh grade students of SMAN 7 Kupang in comprehending narrative text. This research used quantitative method and the main instrument is a test. The test consists of 10 questions. The subjects of this research were the eleventh-grade students of SMAN 7 Kupang in academic year 2020/2021 in language program with total are 33 students. After the students’ work were collected, the writer then found out problems, and calculated the rank of errors done by the students. The result shows that there are the dominant groups ‘middle’ and ‘high’ with (48.48%) and (45.45%) respectively. The rest is a very small percentage which are classified into ‘low’ (6,06%). The students’ ability level overall shows that there are 15 students (45.45%) who get high score. The result of this study show that the ability of reading comprehension on narrative text by eleventh grade students of SMAN 7 Kupang in academic year 2020/2021 is in the middle level of ability. The difficulties of students in comprehension narrative text are: They have less interest to follow English class particularly to learn narrative texts. This is due to the fact that many narrative texts are made of long and imaginative texts which make them boring. Another reason is their poor reading skill that put them in difficulty to understand the text. According to them, English is a difficult subject. From the problems encountered by the students, the writer concludes that students still have problems in lack of vocabulary, because less learning and English practicing in their daily lives. Several solutions to solve the students’ problems namely: (1) Encouraging students’ to read a lot to enrich their vocabulary. (2) Stimulating students’ participation and interest in learning English by involving games, pictures, videos, or songs related to the material. (3) Improving students’ vocabularies, grammar and pronunciation through reading. (4) Giving motivation to students’ not the give up learning English.
