An Analysis of Intrinsic Elements and Educational Values in Ishmael Beah’s Novel “A Long Way Gone: The True Story of A Child Soldier”

This study aims to analyze the intrinsic elements and find out the educational values in the novel A Long Way Gone: The true story of a child soldier written by Ishmael Beah. The method used in this research was the qualitative method, which focused on textual data analysis. The results showed 1) The intrinsic elements; (a) theme of this novel was about the children in war (b) setting in this novel took place in Sierra Leone, West Africa, during the civil war from 1991 until 1997 (c) point of view in this novel used the first-person point of view (d) plot in the novel began when Ishmael's village is attacked by the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) or known as rebels. Ishmael and his friends wandered from village to village to survive until they arrived at a town where the government troops fought and protected people from the rebel. There, the government army led by Lieutenant Jabati started to brainwash Ishmael and his friends and forced them to join the army. For two years, Ishmael shot many guns, used many drugs, and killed many people in the name of revenge for their family who the rebels had killed. Finally, in January 1996, when he was 15 years old, the United Nations soldiers took Ishmael and his friend to the UNICEF rehabilitation center and began their rehabilitation. e), characters; the major characters were Ishmael Beah, Ishmael's family (his parents, his grandmother, Junior), Esther, Ishmael's Uncle, Laura Simms, and Lieutenant Jabati. The minor characters were Musa, Kanei, Saidu, Talloai, Gasemu, Gibrilla, Kaloko, Alhaji, Khalilou, Mambu, Mohamed, Moriba, Mr. Kamara, Dr. Tamba, Jumah, Leslie, Bah, Sheku & Josiah. 2). The educational values found in this novel were divided into values of being and giving, which include values of being: honesty, brave, peace, confidence & potential, discipline, and purity. Meanwhile, values of giving had loyalty, trustworthiness, respect, love & affection, unselfish, kindness & friendliness, and fairness & humanist.
