An Analysis On The Mastery Of English Participles By The Seventh Semester Students Of English Study Program Of Nusa Cendana University

This thesis is entitled “AN ANALYSIS ON THE MASTERY OF ENGLISH PARTICIPLES BY SEVENTH SEMESTER STUDENTS OF ENGLISH STUDY PROGRAM OF NUSA CENDANA UNIVERSITY”. The aims of this research are to know the mastery extent of English participles by the seventh semester students of English study program of Nusa Cendana University, to identify and describe the strengths of seventh semester students of English Study program of Nusa Cendana University in their mastery of English participles, and to identify and describe the weaknesses and the possible causes of the weaknesses in the mastery of English participles by the seventh semester students of the English study program of Nusa Cendana University. The subjects of this research are seventh semester students of English Study program of Nusa Cendana University. In collecting the data, the writer used descriptive method to analyze the seventh semester students’ mastery of English participles. From the data collection, the writer found that generally the use of English participles by the seventh semester students of English Study Program of Nusa Cendana University is still poor because the average of their score in answering the questions about participles is only 47,9. The result of data analysis also shows that most of the seventh semester students appear to be quite strong in recognizing past participle as a verb because the average of their correct answer is 94. But it is difficult for them to use past participle as an adjective because the average of incorrect answer of past participle as an adjective is 85. This is one of their weaknesses in mastering English participles. Two other weaknesses are first, it is difficult for them to distinguish the use of present participles as an adjective because the average of incorrect answer is 96. The next weakness is present participle as a verb. The average of in correct answer about present participle as a verb is 79. Because of those weaknesses, it is difficult for many students to analyze and identify the elements of the sentence when they find participles in the questions. The first possible cause is most of the seventh semester students think that the function of participles is only as a verb but actually there are other functions of participles, namely as an adjective and, for present participle, also as a noun (gerund). The second possible cause is they did not understand the instruction, and the third possible cause is the limit of the time allocated for answering the questions.
