Problems in Writing Descriptive Text Faced by the Seventh Grade Students of SMP Negeri 2 Kupang in the Academic Year 2019/2020

This thesis is entitled ‘Problems in Writing Descriptive Text Faced by the Seventh Grade Students of SMP Negeri 2 Kupang in the Academic Year 2019/2020’. This study aims at presenting the problems that were faced by the students in writing descriptive text and suggesting possible solutions to solve the problems. The subjects of the research is all the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Kupang in the academic year 2019/2020, which counts for 446, and which are distributed in fourteen classes. This number of students becomes the population of this study, and 30 students, which occupy a class were taken as sample. To obtain the data required for this research, the writer has given a test, done an interview and distributed a questionnaire to the subject of this research. Based on the analysis of students' writing, the students’ ability in writing descriptive texts was fair, determined based on the skill levels adopted from Brown (2007). The result of this study also showed that the students faced several problems in writing descriptive text. There were two kinds of problems found in students' writing; they were linguistic problems including grammar and vocabulary related problems, and nonlinguistic problems which include organization of ideas, content and mechanical problems. The most frequently found problems in students’ writing were related to grammar and mechanical. To overcome these problems, there are some suggested solutions which include using cooperative learning or rapid writing strategy in teaching writing descriptive text. In addition, it is also suggested that a teacher should be a good teaching and learning facilitator and should also have a well-prepared teaching material which is appropriate and inspiriting to the topic of teaching.
