The study is entitled: The strategies in mastering English vocabularies by the Fifth-semester students in English Study Program of Nusa Cendana University in the academic year 2020/2021. It was conducted to answer these questions (1) What are the strategies employed by the Fifth Semester students in mastering vocabularies? (2) What are the difficulties faced by the Fifth-semester students in mastering vocabularies? The aims of this study are: to know the students’ strategies in learning English vocabulary, and to about students’ difficulties in learning English vocabulary. The method used in this study was a descriptive qualitative method. The subjects taken for this study were the Fifth-semester students at the English study program of Undana, particularly those in class F. There are 22 questionnaires and 2 questions used by the writer who is collecting the data were adopted from the Yongwei Nie and Li Zhou. The result of the study shows that in meta-cognitive strategy the percentage of the students who paid more attention to keywords with answers always=57%. In cognitive strategy, there are two strategies, they are memorizing words by reading and remembering a word with a keyword, the percentage with answer always=54%. In social mediation, only one strategy that the students used, that is stimulating words by one’s self the percentage with answer often=43%. In learning vocabulary, there are some difficulties faced by the students. They are difficulties in guessing the meaning of the words, difficulties in memorizing words, and are unable to communicate well. It is suggested that the students should be motivated in the learning process, and in applying the appropriate strategies in learning vocabulary.
