This thesis is entitled; “A Review on Some English Teaching Strategies to Improve Speaking Skills of Senior High School Students”. The problems of this research are; (1) What are the types of teaching strategies to improve speaking skills of senior high school students?, (2) How can the strategies be used to improve speaking skills of senior high school students?, (3) What are the strengths and weaknesses of those strategies to improve speaking skills of senior high school students? The aims of this research are to identify types of teaching strategies to improve speaking skills of senior high school students, to describe how the strategies be used to improve speaking skills of senior high school students, and to find out the strengths and weaknesses of those strategies to improve speaking skills of senior high school students. The type of this research is descriptive qualitative in form of library study. The researcher uses type of data sources which are ready to use without conducting a field research and based on what researcher needs to answer problems of research which are from journals, theses, and book. The technique of collecting data is by using documentation. The data are analyzed by using descriptive qualitative technique through three steps which are data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusion. The result of this study shows that there are some types of strategies that teachers used to improve speaking skill of senior high school students. Those strategies are divided according to three base categories; (1) Awareness-raising activities: interview, playing ice ball, and transcription (2) Appropriation activity: guided conversation and English song strategy (3) Toward autonomy: discussion that includes short video through group work and four corners, role play, brainstorming, storytelling, reporting, describing picture, and socio-affective. In the implementation of each strategy, the teachers use various ways that can make students talk more and provides opportunities to cooperate with their friends so they can help each other. Based on the results, the researcher concludes that even though each of those strategies has their own weaknesses in terms of time, media, facilities, and classroom situation, but it also can be seen that the strategies that teachers use are successful enough and able to improve students’ speaking ability in some aspects such as pronunciation, fluency, grammar, and vocabulary.
