This thesis is entitled: An Analysis of the Structure and the Function of Noun Phrases found in TOEFL Reading Texts written by Pamela J. Sharpe published by Barron’s Educational Series, Inc. This research aims to (1) to find out the number of the NPs that are employed in TOEFL Reading Texts, (2) to describe how each of the NP is structured in TOEFL Reading Texts, (3) to explain the function of each of the NP in the TOEFL Reading Texts. The writer used one of the best book recommendations for preparing the TOEFL test: The TOEFL Practice Test Book written by Pamela J. Sharpe, published by Barron’s Educational Series, Inc. The method of this study is a descriptive qualitative method and document analysis as a type of this method. The data analysis used the theory proposed by Greenbaum. The research data are NPs found in the TOEFL Reading Texts, especially TOEFL Reading Text 1 Model Test Two as the text 1 and Text 1 Model Test Three as the text 2. The results of this study are finding out the number of NPs occurred, the structure, and the function of NPs within the TOEFL Reading Texts. (1) There are 51 NPs from Text 1 and 42 NPs from Text 2, (2) The NPs structure from text 1 that occur were: 1. Head, 2. Det + Head, 3. Pre-Mod + Head, 4. Det + Pre-Mod + Head, 6. Det + Head+ Post-Mod, and 8. Det + Pre-Mod + Head + Post Mod. The NPs structure from text 2 that occurred was: 1. Head, 2. Det + Head, 3. Pre-Mod +Head, 4. Det + Pre-Mod + Head, 5. Head + Post-Mod, 6. Det + Head + Post-Mod, and 7. Pre-Mod + Head + Post-Mod (3) From Text 1, the NP function that occurs was: NP functions as a Subject, as a Direct Object, as a Subject Complement, as a Complement of a Preposition, Determinatives, and Adjunct Adverbial. While from Text 2, the NP function that occurs was: NP functions as a Subject, as a Direct Object, as an Indirect Object, as an Object Complement, as a Complement of a Preposition, as Determinatives, and as an Appositive.
