The Effectiveness of Self-Correction in Writing Narrative Text on the Third Semester Students of English Study Program at Nusa Cendana University

The problems of this study are (1 To what extent are the third semester students able to do the self-correction technique in writing narrative text? (2) What are the advantages and disadvantages found by students in applying self-correction technique in writing narrative text? This study’s aims are; (1) To find out the ability of the third semester students in performing the self-correction technique in writing narrative text. (2) To find out the advantages and disadvantages that the students found in using the self-correction technique in writing narrative text. The method used in this research was a descriptive qualitative and quantitative method (mix method). The population used in this study was the third semester students of English Study Program of Nusa Cendana University. The number of population was 180 students. The researcher selected a class out of the six classes of the third semester as the sample. The class consisted of 28 students. In this research, the researcher used 2 instruments. The first instrument was test in the form of a writing task for answering the first research question. The students wrote narrative stories based on their point of view, the stories written were not less than 250 words. Each of them only wrote one story. For the second research question, the researcher used interview. The researcher analyzed the data by grading, comparing, and identifying the result of the test and interview. The result shows that self-correction technique is effective and it brings the students’ average mean scores from 64,95 to 75,22 and reaches 87,28. The reearcher also found the advantages and disadvantages faced by the students in writing narrative text by using the self-correction technique. The students found it fun and it also allows them to measure their skills, builds their independence and confidence. While the disadvantage was the lack of knowledge they had in dealing with the errors and mistakes.
