The Structure and Use of English Noun Phrases Employed in IELTS Reading Text 1 by Guy Brook-Hart and Vanessa Jakeman

This thesis is entitled: The Structure and Use of English Noun Phrase Employed in IELTS Reading Text 1 by Guy Brook-Hart and Vanessa Jakeman. The research problems of this study are what types of noun phrases, how each noun phrase is formed, and the use of each noun phrase employed in IELTS Reading Text. The aims of this research are: (1) to analyze the types of noun phrase in IELTS reading text, (2) to explain the structure of noun phrases in IELTS reading text, and (3) to describe the use of noun phrases employed in the IELTS reading text. The research method used is the descriptive qualitative method. The data resource is the IELTS Reading Text One by Guy Brook-Hart and Vanessa Jakeman Band 4-5 Student’s Book Published by Cambridge University Press in 2012. The writer used document analysis as the technique of data collection. The techniques of data analysis are: 1) The writer identified the types of noun phrase employed in IELTS Reading Text, 2) The writer explained the structure of noun phrase employed in IELTS Reading Text, 3) the writer described the use of noun phrase employed in IELTS Reading Text. The results shows that all the noun phrases employed in the text are endocentric type. Among all the noun phrases, 95 noun phrases are formed by pre-modifier + head noun, two noun phrases are formed by head noun + post-modifier, and 16 noun phrases are formed by pre-modifier + head noun + post-modifier. Among the 113 noun phrases, 15 noun phrases are used as subjects, 65 noun phrases are used as direct objects, one noun phrase is used as an indirect object, 30 noun phrases are used as preposition complements, one noun phrase is used as a subject complement, and one noun phrase is used as an appositive.
