THE DIFFICULTIES IN LEARNING VOCABULARY FACED BY THE FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS OF SMP NEGERI 3 KOTA KUPANG IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2021/2022

ABSTRACT
This research is entitled “The difficulties in learning vocabulary faced by the first-year students at SMP Negeri 3 Kota Kupang in the school year 2021/2022”. The problems of this research were (1) What are the student’s difficulties in learning vocabulary? (2) What are the factors influencing students’ difficulties in mastering vocabulary? The aims were to find out the difficulties of students in learning vocabulary and to find out the factors influencing students’ difficulties in mastering vocabulary. The subjects of this study were the students SMP Negeri 3 Kota Kupang, class VII. This study employed a qualitative research method. For gaining the data, the researcher used observations and tests. All the data were analyzed descriptively. The finding showed that the students still faced problems or difficulties in vocabulary learning. The students had difficulties in (1) pronouncing the words, (2) writing and spelling the words, (3) using the different grammatical forms of words known as inflections, (4) choosing the appropriate meaning of the words, and (5) using the words based on the contexts, (6) understanding words or expression that are idiomatic expressing. Some factors causing students difficulties in learning vocabulary were (1) the written form is different from the spoken form in English, (2) the number of words that the students need to learn is exceedingly large, (3) the limitations of sources of information about words, (4) the complexity of words knowledge. Knowledge of words more than their dictionary definitions, (5) lack of understanding of grammatical aspects of the words, and (6) lack of sound similarity between English and the student's native language. It is suggested that 1) to teachers it is suggested to English teachers use simple vocabulary in their teaching process because simple vocabulary makes the students focus and interested in the lesson. 2) To School, it is expected that the school can give better facilities for students to support their learning activities, for example providing a language laboratory for students to practice English. 3) Students are expected to put more effort into learning vocabulary to maximize their focus because it is difficult to memorize any other vocabulary in the current Pandemic of Covid-19. 4) To the readers, the writer hopes the result of this study could be useful not only for the English teachers and the writer. 5) The result of this study may become useful information for other researchers in conducting any research related to students’ problems in learning English especially related to vocabulary mastery.
